Newcastle United Foundation welcomed young people receiving treatment at the Great North Children’s Hospital to St. James’ Park for a fun day of games and activities.

Dozens of children who are receiving treatment at the Great North Children’s Hospital were invited to take part in an afternoon of entertainment designed to allow families to take part in fun activities together.

Through funding from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Newcastle Hospitals Charity, Newcastle United Foundation staff work year-round with young patients and their families at the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH) paediatric oncology wards, providing vital respite support through activities, games and team building.

Steve Beharall, Head of Newcastle United Foundation, said: “It is our pleasure to welcome so many children and their families to St. James’ Park and giving them the opportunity to do things as a family which they otherwise may not have been able to do.

“Hospital stays and medical treatment can be very difficult for children and young people, as well as their families, and the support from our staff working on the wards makes a huge difference.

“We aim to help maintain and build self-confidence by keeping young patients active, entertained and engaged at a time when they really need additional support.”

He added: “We're very proud of the partnership we have built with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Newcastle Hospitals Charity, which means we can continue to provide this vital support.”

As well as a number of games and activity stations – including magicians, supercars and freestyle footballers – families also met with players from Newcastle United Women, with Georgia Gibson and Sharna Wilkinson taking time out to engage with the children aged five to 12.

Teri Bayliss, Charity Director at Newcastle Hospitals Charity said: “Making the hospital experience a little easier for young patients is one of the key priorities for Newcastle Hospitals Charity. We are delighted that our partnership with the Newcastle United Foundation has helped to create such a special day for these children and their families.”

Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi also surprised young guests by joining the event and getting to know families enjoying their time at the stadium.
