This year’s campaign activity also places emphasis on education, with schoolchildren around the country taking part in a Premier League Primary Stars poetry-writing competition to celebrate diversity. Newcastle United Foundation invited pupils across the region to participate in a competition themed ‘Greatness Comes From Everywhere’.
The winning entry is Year 5 pupil Katherine from St Bernadette’s Primary School in Wallsend. Katherine’s poem also progresses to the national round of the competition, having already been backed by Newcastle United’s Anthony Elanga who showed admiration for the inspiring piece.
The national judging panel consists of current broadcasters, journalists, writers and members of the National Literacy Trust and Premier League Charitable Fund and ex-Premier League players – including former Magpies striker and Newcastle United Foundation Trustee, Shola Ameobi.
David Hall, Senior Primary Coordinator at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “It has been inspiring to engage pupils across our Premier League Primary Stars network with resources exploring diversity, what it means and why it is so important.
“Writing poems about diversity has encouraged important conversations in the classroom and helped children to consider diversity within their own lives and what it means to them.
“We were so impressed Katherine’s poem and we are thrilled she is receiving the recognition she deserves.”
Premier League Primary Stars is the Premier League’s primary school education programme. Funded by the Premier League through the Premier League Charitable Fund, the programmes uses the appeal of football to help children to be active and develop essential life skills.
Greatness Comes From Everywhere
Greatness comes from everywhere,
I can feel it in the evening air,
Swift as rivers, steady as streams,
Greatness is what the world should mean.
Greatness is a seed that evenly sprouts,
Greatness is a gift that makes you want to shout,
Greatness is a push for a new tomorrow,
Greatness is a hug that heals your sorrow.
Greatness is not a weakness, it’s a power,
Greatness is like a never-ending tower,
Greatness is an encourager who said you are a star,
Greatness is a family who loves you the way you are.
Greatness is a book with many increasing pages,
Greatness is an instructor who has several different stations,
Greatness is like footsteps echoing on the streets,
Greatness has different hearts and they all make different beats.
