Refugees and families seeking sanctuary have been exploring new opportunities to boost their physical and mental wellbeing with support from Newcastle United Foundation this Refugee Week.

The official charity arm of Newcastle United provides inclusive programmes for people in the North East through employability, education, sport and health and wellbeing sessions – inclusive of all abilities, backgrounds, faiths and races.

Activities to celebrate Refugee Week included an 11-a-side tournament on behalf of Newcastle United Foundation’s Active Through Football programme in a round robin competition alongside teams from Middlesbrough FC and Leeds United.

To round off Refugee Week, families and young people were invited to NUCASTLE, powered by Newcastle Building Society, exploring the building’s sports hall and play spaces, with more than 100 participants also enjoying a family event at St. James’ Park on the day.

Robert Burns, Senior Active Through Football Coordinator at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “This week’s events hold great significance for our community as we come together to recognise and support Refugee Week.

“It is a time to celebrate the resilience, strength, and contributions of refugees who have sought safety and refuge. By acknowledging their journeys and embracing their experiences, we foster inclusivity and build a stronger, more compassionate society.”

He added: “Joining our sessions not only offers an opportunity for fun and physical activity, but also represents a powerful way to extend a warm welcome and support to refugees and their families.
“Together, we create an environment where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and empowered and use sport as a common language to unite us all.

“Whether you are interested in our free adult football sessions, children’s activities, or family badminton at NUCASTLE, your participation sends a positive message of unity and acceptance.”

Earlier this season Newcastle United Foundation, alongside Newcastle United Football Club, were awarded Football Club of Sanctuary status for its inclusive commitment and dedication to supporting people in the city who are seeking refuge.

Speaking of work in the community, Steve Beharall, Chief Executive of Newcastle United Foundation, added: “It is Newcastle United Foundation’s purpose to inspire, connect and collaborate to enhance people’s lives and our inclusion work engaging all communities living and working here in the North East is key to meeting that mission.

“We are proud to provide equal opportunities and a warm welcome to those seeking refuge across our region and we will continue to lead the way in developing an inclusive culture so we can deliver on our responsibility for those in need.”
